Visiting Novelist Speaks at Te Ringa Awhina Marae
On Tuesday 6 September a powhiri was held at Te Ringa Awhina Marae for Dr Paula Morris (University of Auckland) an award winning Novelist of Ngati Wai descent.
She spoke to our tauira Maori and students taking Te Reo as a subject about the importance of writing and gave specific tips on how students should start their journey in writing.
Dr Paula Morris spoke about her novel Rangatira (Penguin, 2011) and her Tipuna Paratene (this book won the fiction categories at the 2012 New Zealand Post Book Awards and Nga Kupu Ora Maori Book Awards).

Whanau Hui for Matariki
As Matariki is a time of new beginnings and sharing, it was positive to hear from our akonga and senior Maori Leaders Rosie Kennedy and Henry Samuels about their journeys at Lynfield and their future plans.
It was also very fitting for Hine Samuels, as a new Board of Trustees member, to address whanau.
To get everyone working and having fun together.. students, staff and whanau were set a challenging activity by Mr Winn relating to NCEA credits!
The hangi fundraiser went well also thanks to Whaea Tebay and Whaea Maihi and we extend special thanks to the Maori focus group, students and whanau who attended and helped out.
He mihi nui ki te Atua mo tenei wa motuhake o te tau

Nga mihi ki nga kotiro katoa.
Performing Proudly at Polyfest
Last week's ASB Polyfest was a very special occasion as our Indian group performed on the Diversity Stage, and our Kapahaka group was awarded first prize in the co-educational schools' Mau Rakau category.
This year’s theme for Polyfest was ‘Care for our seas and our lands, so that the safety of our homes both present and past endure forever’. The five and a half minute performance by the Indian group was choreographed around songs that reflected the preservation and significance of water and land. An early morning performance was made even earlier with a last minute time change, putting extra pressure on the 13 senior students and a single Year 9. But these experienced performers took the stage with confidence and danced their hearts out to a fusion of Bollywood favourites. They all had great fun rehearsing, performing and enjoying a full day at Polyfest.
Congratulations to everyone (students, staff and whanau) who worked so hard to ensure Lynfield College was so well represented at this event.
